That traffic is a constantly talked about problem amongst skiers living in Denver.

SLC to Park City is 40 mins (33 miles) with no other cars on the road. Traffic can add to that, though that traffic doesn't even compare to the Denver-Breck traffic.

Trying to pass off the SLC-Park City commute as the same as Denver-Breckenridge is completely disingenous. On a comparable day (IE SLC on a weekday vs. Denver on a weekday, or SLC on a weekend vs Denver on a weekend) the Denver/Breck journey is at LEAST twice as far.
This. In spades.

The new laws in CO on same-sex marriage, recreational marijuana use, alimony, and pending gun control legislation has caused me to start looking for another retirement destination. Does Utah tax Social Security? How high are typical property taxes?

I may live in Utah but I traveled Colorado and especially that I-25 corridor for business for 12 years. Indeed the Denver traffic is horrific to say the least. I hate Utah's traffic and more so the drivers as well but I don't think you can yet compare them. Denver is orders of magnitudes worse. Utah will get get worse as time goes on however. And the smog is also getting far from tolerable. I'm not sure why anyone would want to live in EITHER place given the choice to move further out. I did that Denver to Breckenridge drive many times. I preferred to do it between 9-11am and leave it at that. Otherwise it can get pretty bad, especially with all the semi traffic.

Considering that the LDS church does not condone BEING gay, only acting on it, UT may not be the conservative paradise you imagine. In addition, SLC has one of the highest per capita populations of GLBT folks in the country. Along with a few known gayborhoods. I don't know anyone who discriminates against them. Oh and there is a large Gay Pride parade downtown that is well attended. In fact, last year a contingent of Active Mormons marched in it to show support.

Property taxes vary by location (cities). My tax on a house appraised at $309K were about $2800/yr in SLC. I think I was taxed on Soc Sec but I don't remember.

My house in one of the poorest counties in upstate NY (possibly "the" poorest, trying to be conservative) has an assessed value of $95,000. My taxes last year were right around $4,200. I pay more in taxes each month than my mortgage.
