Happy 24th everyone. What are you doing for the holiday. Have you talked to friends or family out of state bragging it is a day off for most of us?

Elfyum,
Pioneer day, the 24th of july, celebrates the arrival of the mormon pioneers into the Salt Lake valley in 1847. It is a state holiday and most places are closed. Unfortunately elder_shawn has to work.
There is a big parade in down town Salt Lake, a huge rodeo, fireworks and other festivities around the state.

Had to work 1/2 day in the Avenues. And yeah, I also needed to dodge the marathon, but no big deal.

I don't know bout the rest of you, but the 24th seems to be getting bigger every year. (unless it falls on sunday!) That's OK though, we really need a day off from our busy-bee lifestyle to reflect and appreciate where we live.

But, I have to wonder ....have we reached carrying capacity yet?

How many of you Utah folks have the 24th as a PAID holiday??

Do all Mormon owned business give you the day off with pay? Do state workers get a paid holiday?

My husband got a paid holiday, but the company is not mormon owned. My sister works for the state and also got a paid hoilday. Sorry for those of you that had to work. We just got back from the fireworks.

Just heard they found Destiny Norton dead. It breaks my heart.

Is it really Amelia Earhart day. Girl power!!!! I love america we have a day for everything!!!

Ah, thanx Lori, for the info. That's really neat that it's a paid holiday. I wonder how many other states have such a day as Utah celebrates where the majority of the people have the day off? ...probably some back east.

Hmm, I thought I heard on the news about some little girl missing. I didn't know the detals until I Googled the name and found the series of articles in the SLC newspaper about Destiny Norton. Yes, that is so sad ...really very sad; only 5 years old. It really hurt to read the details.

The interesting fact here is that the Norton family is of a lower socio-economic background and as such didn't get as much nationwide press coverage compared to say, Elizabeth Smart. Both were from SLC area LDS families only one was poor and the other super rich.

One of the articles was saying that the Norton family had been in trouble with the police before ...that they were beer drinking, pot smoking folks. For some reason, that profile just doesn't fit my image of a Mormon family but as an LDS friend once told me, not all Mormons are prim-and-proper, law abiding citizens.

No matter, again, it's so sad to hear that happened to a 5 year old girl.
