My family is seriously considering a move to southern Washington, and we're looking for a small, rural community, preferably in the mountains, with excellent schools. I've been researching for several days, and I'm having trouble finding something that matches this description. Any recommendations you can provide are much appreciated.

I won't provide you as much detail on schools, but I got some great info on locations, services, ect.

Stevenson, Washington

Skamania County! That is rural, beautiful views, along the Columbia Gorge. Their county seat and biggest town of just over 1,000 is Stevenson. They have a small downtown and shops to cater to the locals. Bigger shopping can be done in Vancouver, WA just about an hour away. It is a rural town on a hillside within the Cascade Mountains on the Columbia Gorge! Lots of geography. Also, nearby Carson, WA is more rural. All the schools in this rural county are located in either of these two locations, Stevenson or Carson. Stevenson is the only incorporated town.

Camas, Washington

Washougal, Washington

If you want ruralish/suburban, check out Camas and Washougal. Neither are mountain towns, but they are Along the Columbia River, and you are looking at mountains.

Going further from the Vancouver, WA region, but still in Clark County, you got rural Amboy and Yacolt. Yacolt might be a stretch but it is real rural, with just a general store and town hall. They have train tours during "tourist season." It is located in the mountains and surrounded by forest. Just small town living.

Amboy is not really a condensed town, but rural land plots that people have a home on. More acreage and land to spread out too. There is a tiny general store and students are bused to the school NE Chelatchie Road. High School students are bused elsewhere.

Living in and around Ridgefield is nice as well. Might be worth a look, small town charm, surrounded by farmland and trees. Shopping just a quick drive on I-5 to Vancouver.

Troutlake, WA !!! Very tough to beat school in SW WA Mtns.

Camas or Hockinson. if you require a job / populace / access to suburbia (Mtns 5-10 min from each)
(and if you plan to use Running Start for HS, VERY popular in WA... FREE college instead of HS).
http://www.clark.edu/academics/programs/running_start/

I certainly CAN"T recommend Skamania Schools...

White Salmon might be in 4th place for my requirements. (Can do Underwood and realize lower Skamania Cty Taxes, but access to WS schools)
