Smile Thanks

Thanks for the reply. Not sure what you mean about wanting to be/act like a Californian? My wife grew up on a farm in upstate NY. I moved to Orange County from Santa Monica when I was 11. We had no fences, orange groves for playing in and tumble weeds when the winds blew. I've seen the place grow from there. We're just looking for some peace and quiet with open spaces.

The only thing I don't like about Camas is the paper factory is a huge eyesore. It is just down right ugly. I also cannot get used to the smell. Friends still in Camas visit us and I smell that awful odor on their clothes and in their car. They have become used to it but I never could. But that's just me. I Have always been sensitive to smells.

I'm sorry but I think you're imagining things. I have a fabulous sense of smell and can't ever smell the mill unless I'm right downtown. No, I'm not used to it. I haven't lived here that long and I've never smelled it like you're suggesting.

They wouldn't be building these new million dollar homes everywhere if Camas stunk, millionaires dont live in stinky towns as kind of a rule.

They would if it were fashionable. They don't because it isn't, and they can afford not to.

Not unlike some of those high end perfumes that are desirable despite smelling horrible because they cost thousands per bottle.

Actually I think that is the opposite. I present to you all of the multi million dollar homes in LA, NYC and London. All three have a serious funk to them.

Meh. There's a pretty big difference there - NYC/LA/London are appealing because they are cultural/financial centers of the world. Smell is incidental, and perhaps necessary due to the crush of humanity necessary to make them cultural and financial centers.

Camas is attractive because it's bucolic and reasonably close to Portland. But it's not the only bucolic place closish to Portland. A strong, distasteful smell would push people to look for alternatives, of which several are at least possible.

My husband and I are considering a move to the Vancouver area. We have been planning a move for several years, though we originally thought about Oregon. It seems that houses and land in Oregon are just about as expensive as where we live, Northern California. My husband was born here, I am from Oklahoma and came out here about 7 years ago.

We are looking for a place that we are able to find employment first of all, and very important is a place we can afford a bit of land. We don't need a huge amount of acreage, but would like from 1 to 5 acres. We would like to have a huge garden, the house is not as important as the land, a fixer-upper if fine. ( to an extent!) No young kids, my daughter is 22 and will not be moving with us. Both of us are 40 years old, I am in the legal field, and my husband currently owns his own business as an arborist. He would love to stay in the same field, potentially opening up his own business again in the future, I am open as to where I will be willing to work. Legal field, a different field, it doesn't matter to me.

Can anyone tell me of a few good areas to check out when we come up to Washington next month to look around? We have family in Vancouver who we will be staying with for a few days. We do love the proximity to Portland that Vancouver and the surrounding area has, but not being from the area we don't know the best places to look. We are looking to rent rather than buy a house and land right away so we can make sure an area is right for us.

Thanks!
My wife and I moved up here last Dec. from S. CA and have been very happy. People are much more friendly. Even the DMV was a pleasant experience. Vancouver is good because there are no state income taxes in WA and Portland is just minutes away where there is no sales tax. Big savings! We've looked around and like the Ridgefield area the best. Other area's to consider: Camas, Battleground, Brush Prairie and La Center(a little farther north). Do a Google Earth tour of spots you find. I think you'll be happy up here.

Depends where you are moving from, and what you consider as safe. Vancouver is very safe, but

98662 covers a pretty broad area with various options for communities.
You don't say if you have an option, or already booked a place.
