Wow, this is a big bummer. we've visited the PNW a number of times over the years in the summer and never experienced this kind of thing. Granted the last time was a few years back. From our last trip in August, 2016:

Nice you have some memories and pics, as it will NOT be like that this trip.

Parched / hazy / smelly...

Where was the coastal picture taken?

So I wondering if we are going to be swimming in a sea of hazy skies from all of these fires? I saw some hazy pictures of Seattle recently that looked pretty bad. They were reporting very bad air quality along with eastern WA even more so. I guess some days are worse than others depending on winds, etc... Then I saw this post from the National Weather Service which was pretty shocking. Yuk!

There's been talk on some of the other boards as well as PNW news channels about Summer fires and associated poor air becoming the new normal. I sure hope not! But the high heat coupled with no rain definitely makes the areas more dry and fire prone.

CA is also experiencing some big fires which seem to be increasing year to year. We currently have the largest wildfire in the state's history in Mendacino. Though our area along the coast isn't affected by this at least right now. We have been hit by similar bad air days from fires in the past including the Big Sur fire we had a couple of years ago.

Edmonton visibility of the river from my balcony was smoked out so heavily I could not see it and it was only across the street. Rating was 10 and today it was 4+. Since the wind changed 2 days ago it blew the smoke toward the lower mainland. The past two days we actually saw the sky and the sun which had been covered over by smoke for more than a week maybe 10 days. The smoke came along just as we were forecasted to get temps up to 38C and it lowered the temp to 32C. August has been really awful.

When's the last time you saw blue sky or the nearby mountains? Its sorta a double bummer for us since we just spent our summer vacation on the Big Island while the volcano was erupting and spewing out vog across the island making it hard to breath. Though there were 'parts' one could escape to and get away from it. Most of our trips we need to plan in advance due to school and work schedules. Can't just switch 'em out at the last minute.

Here's some shots from another past August in WA. So I know it can be very nice out in the summer months! That's why I also posed the question of a 'new normal' which some are speculating on. Though I would hope at the worst its a cycle that will eventually swing back the other way - to more smokeless days.

We drove the Oregon Coast which was clear - definitely no smoky skies. That particular shot was in Brookings. Here's another from Shore Acres which was gorgeous out as well:

It just depends on the winds on any given day. Saturday we had winds out of the west that mostly cleared the skies though mountain views were still hazy. But the smoke was back Sunday and the thickest I’ve seen it so far this year today.

Saw one article giving the phenomenon a new term, smoke storm.

I was in Port Angeles today, and omg the smoke was bad. It was thick, dark, and you could smell the smokiness. The sun was not visible at all. It has been like this for days & days, not just an isolated day or two, with brief interludes of clear. A woman passed out on the sidewalk in front of me after complaining about the smoke, I am not kidding. It reminded of when I was caught in the fires in Southern California. What is happening???

Outdoor practices and activites are being cancelled around the region. My daughter's soccer practice was cancelled yesterday. I think all the local HS football teams are cancelling practices or holding them indoors. This happened last year too during the fires in the gorge.
