I won't be moving to vancouver until april, but I am looking at cheap living options. I'll want my own place, but thats about my only requirement. Preferably right downtown, or at least close enough. Would settle for close proximity to the sky train. Studio, Bachelor Apt., 1 Bed. I'd be fine with one of those cliche sort of warehouse type run down studios you see in movies.

But where to look? Do places like this still exist? Or has everything been redone and marked up? I've browsed kijiji, craigs and a few links i've seen on here. Is this the kind of thing best done in person? any suggestions as to what area of the city i should focus my search on?

Any help would be most appreciated! Thanks.

craigslist and kijiji are probably the best options... you can get an idea of the price range from there. Most of the apartments in downtown are condos and owned by individuals - vs the entire building being owned by a building management, so setting up appointments to see the apartment is a little tricky since you have to work around people and their work schedules. I recommend shortlisting the places you like and set up appointments, and check places out in person. Downtown is usually expensive with prices ranging from 1000-1500. If you want to go cheaper i would look in the richmond area or look for a basement apartment near a skytrain station.
