I am thinking of driving down to Vancouver for one day (maybe tomorrow -- Thursday) from Seattle.
I will need to work for a few hours from coffee shops and perhaps libraries. Can anyone recommend any coffee shops that are large and have free wifi? Is parking easy in the daytime and is it free outside of the downtown areas?
Any places outside of the downtown area that are recommended for a one day visit?
Sure, it's free outside downtown for the most part. Come down to Kitsilano, plenty of coffee shops with free wifi and it's a charming residential area with two bustling high streets, West 4th avenue and Broadway (which is West 9th on the grid). You could take a walk down to the beach or peruse the local shops. It's also near University of British Columbia and all of the interesting museums, beaches, gardens and wilderness trails it represents.
If you want to go somewhere a little less polished, go over to Commercial drive. Recently hip with some a cool bohemian vibe, but still a little rough around the edges, it can be fun place to hang out.
My main suggestion outside of the core remains Kitsilano, however.
It is rare to find any free parking in downtown Vancouver. Not only is parking expensive, you have to pay for parking up until 10pm. Parking for a couple hours could add up.
There's a Starbucks on the corner of Main and 14th that is nice and has free wi-fi. Main street has its trendy spots, especially from 19th Avenue up until 27th Avenue, there are some nice little shops (from 19th to 25th) and some neat restaurants (from 25th to 27th Ave).
Granville Island is nice too and has some free parking - but no idea about the coffee shop there or free wifi - but nice to hang out nonetheless.
