Hi everyone, my partner and I are from the U.S., and love Vancouver so much that we want to move there permanently. We both work in the film industry, so we could easily adjust there, and contribute to help Canada’s economy. I have a relative in nearby New Westminster, and have visited her several times.
I realize that there is a process we have to go through if we actually want to become citizens of Canada, so this may take some time. As far as weather, I’ve lived in the state of Oregon before so I know what to expect, and I actually like clouds and rain, so that won’t be a problem at all.
We like the area around Stanley Park... are there any new, or somewhat new high-rise buildings that anyone can recommend?

I would repeat the advice I just offered to another fellow American in love with Vancouver and wanting to move there.
Be aware that Vancouver is post card pretty but pretty lousy (some call it a wasteland) when it comes to good paying jobs and careers.....I strongly advice to spend an extended amount of time in the city and talk to people before considering moving there (or any other city, the advice is not limited to Vancouver of course). Get the pulse of what living there really is, pros and cons.
It could turn out being an expensive mistake.
Living in the Stanley Park area is extremely expensive (actually out of this world if you want to buy)
Working in the movie industry is definitely an advantage because you can try to get a temporary gig in Vancouver so you can "try out" the city without committing yourself to a permanent move.
Even though we would like to live in Vancouver now, we have no plans to rush things. Like I’ve said, if we do make a final decision to move to Canada we’ll go through the process of getting jobs first, and rent an apartment to start, even though we’re financially able to buy if we chose to.
BTW, what do people think of Burnaby or New Westminster? I’ve noticed both areas have an urban feel despite being in the suburbs. Also, I like taking SkyTrain into downtown Vancouver!
There's a new Brewery District in New Westminster that is pretty hip and up-and-coming. In Burnaby, the major centers are Metrotown, Brentwood and Lougheed in descending order of price that are all connected via mass transit. You are looking at close to 2k/month for rent at least if you want to be by Stanley Park.
I have to say condo rental is a burden for everyone. My rental is around 2k/mth, so have to cut off the budget for anything else like internet, grocery and transportation. Internet part, I choose CIK Telecom for Fiber optics network, just around $40 per month, quite reasonable. Grocery, maybe Chinese supermarket or small grocery store that offers better pricing. transportation, walk to work!

Burnaby is nice, but a lot of traffic.
New West? Not a place people aspire to live. When I go there, I feel surrounded by old people waiting to die.
Also, are either of you going to be driving? The skytrain shuts down at 1am.
