My guess it is someone or some group that was opposed to the the building of the gondola and viewing platforms on the Stawamus Chief a few years ago.

For those that don't know, the Stawamus Chief is the largest granite monolith in North America, and second largest in the world after the Rock of Gibraltar.

A reaction against deforestation and trying to make big $$$ out of natural resources, which are supposed to belong to everyone, not to a select few that put a pay wall around it (to get fat without any work). The reaction is not bad in principle, albeit the means of action could be less dangerous and safety-impacting.

Stone Mountain gives the caveat " largest exposed granite monolith "

This article lists 14 different ones, explaining some of the differences. I'm curious as to the cubic metres of Stone Mountain, compared to the Stawamus Chief.

The Chief would appear to be more dramatic since it rises 702 metres ( 2,300 feet ) above the town, and Stone Mountain is only 251 metres ( 825 feet ).

Hopefully the angle makes this a bit more scary than it is, however you won't catch me doing this on the Chief.
