It arrived a couple of days ago, so far I tried the steak and bacon. The steak was just a generic vegeterian hamburger that you can buy in any supermarket, so nothing special there. It was extremely dense though. The bacon really stood out, it's pretty impressive how realistic they made it. I haven't tried it yet, but I imagine it would be very nice to combine it with aubergine and feta cheese, so I'll have to attempt that later.
i don't think any fake meat is all that realistic - the closest thing i can think of is fake ground beef, which sometimes has the same weird dog food taste as the ground beef they served in my elementary school cafeteria!
the closest thing i can think of that's *good* is some fake sausages - gimme lean breakfast sausage and field roast sausages. lightlife fake pepperoni is pretty good too.
i don't understand the "why don't you just eat meat" thing - that's like asking someone who likes to play violent video games why they don't just go out and kill people in real life. you might like the taste and texture but that doesn't mean you think it's ok to exploit or kill an animal to get them.
I would suggest things like Quorn and Fieldroast. Neither of these is soy, so they will be different, Quorn is mushroom fungus and Fieldroast is wheat gluten. Field Roast Grain Meat Co.
The Asian wheat gluten products are really very good, and some of the soy ones are pretty good too, as are the mushroom products. You'd likely only find these in Asian stores or restaurants.
Nuts are a great meat substitute. Walnuts and pecans for instance can be chopped into at ground beef consistency and flavored to taste. Mexican style is easy to reproduce with nuts (instead of beef). Some people soak the nuts overnight to make them softer.
I recommend Quorn Naked Chik'n Cutlets! I stopped eating anything with a face in July of 2009 and in the last few weeks tried Quorn naked chicken breasts and loved it! (I didn't like the taste of plain chicken when I did eat meat, but I liked shredded chicken in certain dishes, and the Quorn is a perfect substitute!)
TVP works great for me, and it's cheap. Use in spaghetti sauce, sloppy joes, chili, . . . anywhere you would use ground meat. Not much flavor on it's own, but put it in a flavorful sauce and you've got a nice meaty dish.
Well, for one, I don't 'crave' the taste, I just enjoy it occasionally. Anyway, eating meat is not worth the animal suffering for me.
Yes, but animals are not picked out for your personal pleasure and strangled on the spot. The animal in question will die whether you eat it or not. Someone else will. It literally makes no difference.

Let's think about this for a minute. True, a specific animal is not picked out for you (well maybe lobster), but choosing not to eat an animal does not cause another person to eat an extra animal. Now, think of how much meat an average person might eat in their lifetime. "the animal in question" becomes many animals. It does make an impact.
Besides, that point is trumped by the moral implications. For example, I assume you are morally opposed to slavery.. if slavery were legal and practiced, does that mean it would make no difference if you owned slaves?
