Have you tried making them?

Bought some at the market awhile back, crispy, dried yummy kale that presumably, had been doused in a marinade of some sort and then dried in a food hydrator or low oven.

The ingredients on the bag were: kale, tamari, tahini, garlic, lemon juice and nutritional yeast.

After googling kale chips, tried making 'salt and vinegar' in the oven .. 250' .. spread on parchment paper/cookie sheet for about twenty minutes or so .. and were pretty good! very crispy, very delicate. A little messy as they kind of explode apart in your mouth as you eat them, but a tasty, healthy alternative to chips or other munchies.

The recipe was 1 tbsp of apple cider vinegar to 3 tbsp of extra virgin olive oil

Recipe suggested stem removal and leaves torn into large pieces, and then tossed with vinegar and oil and rubbed in by hand.

* Important not to salt until later or they'd get too mucky and wouldn't dry

* might try a little more vinegar next time as they weren't very tangy

Sure that a food hydrator does a better job at keeping it 'raw' .. but worked fine in a low oven (250') for 20 - 30 minutes for those that don't care.

Haven't tried making the tamari, tahini .. one yet. Assume you dip the whole kale leaf into the marinade, gently shake excess and lay on parchment and cookie sheet and sprinkle with nutritional yeast flake .. which tastes like parmesan cheese.

They are so good!

Anyway, there must be all sorts of good marinades one could try .. different vinegrettes, or salad dressings as long as they weren't too thick.

Anyone else have any good kale chips recipes you've tried?

If you haven't tried them, give them a whirl .. great way to eat kale.

I love kale chips! I make my own, just a little olive oil and salt and bake them at 250 for about 40 minutes so the whole piece is crispy. Delicious! I also have a great raw kale salad that is wonderful. Let me know if you want the recipe

Kale Chips are great! I just grab a spice mix from the cabinet sprinkle on and bake until crispy! Love it with a little garlic salt or jerk seasoning.

Thanks for all your input everyone.

Sheena12, did hear that whole foods was selling them, .. for $2 or $3 more a very small bag than what the woman at the market was selling them for.

Amy, would love a recipe for a great raw kale salad if you feel inspired .. thanks!

MsPb78m do you add any liquid, or just sprinkle on a dry mix? That's just too easy.

I noticed this post and I wonder if y'all have ever had frizzled spinach? You just heat some oil and deep fry the fresh, dry spinach (I suppose kale would work) for a few seconds and it comes out like potato chips. Super yummy, and it stays bright green.

Kale Salad - Enjoy!

2 bunch kale
½ tsp salt
2 oz. almonds, slivered
1.75 oz. parmesan cheese, shredded
2 tbsp olive oil
1 tbsp red wine vinegar
2 oz. currants or raisins
1 med onion, red, chopped

1. Prepare the kale by de-stemming it. Fold a kale leaf in half and use a knife to slice down the stem. Wash leaves thoroughly and dry (a salad spinner works well). Once dry, put about a handful of kale in a food processor at a time and chop it for a few seconds. The kale should be chopped but not fine.

2. Put all the kale in a big salad bowl and add the salt. Mix the salt well with the kale so it's evenly distributed.

3. Add the rest of the ingredients and mix well.

Note: Depending on the size of the kale bunches, I adjust the other ingredients accordingly. I may add a little more almonds for more crunch, a little more parmesan cheese for flavor, etc. Play around with it.

I laugh when I hear people say they only buy kale to feed it to their pet lizards, haha.
