AnonChick reminded me how great nuts and seeds are for replacing the protein of meat: almonds, cashews, walnuts, peanuts, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, flaxseed meal, etc.

Roasted sunflower seeds are my favorite "condiment" to salads. Any kind of salad at all. A couple sprinkles of sunflower seeds puts sunshine into every salad!

I agree. I think all of this hysteria is generated from two sources - the meat industry and non vegetarians who are uncomfortable about what they eat.

The Japanese have been eating soy, soy products - tofu, miso etc for centuries.
Cancer, heart disease and obesity were unknown until the adopted a meat filled western diet.

I'm not a big fan of fake meat that tastes and feels like real meat and over the past year I've learnt how to make some great dishes. I've found that when I learn a little more about herbs and spices and make something really deep and rich in flavor like moussaka, it's really satisfying and more interesting. Indian food, Mexican, Middle-Eastern, and many Chinese meals can be very satisfying without flesh. Another example, I had fried cabbage with onions, garlic, soy sauce, raisins, and pecans. That was surprisingly good, lol Normally not a fan of cabbage but that was awesome.

Do you have a Trader Joe's nearby?

We love chickpea cutlets & black bean burgers. As long as you can handle wheat gluten, you can make plenty of meat like patties for cooking that are soy free. They are absolutely great.

Some of the other posters mentioned soy. I'll say this about it. Soy is controversial and no, I'm not talking about the GMO stuff. It does funny things that mimic estrogen for men. Supposedly it has benefits like reduced prostate cancer. Supposedly it has negatives like men growing boobs. I would do your own research and decide if you want a diet that is heavy in it.

That being said, fermented soy is just fine for you because that removes the harmful components. If you do you use soy, like soy sauce, make sure its from non GMO soy beans or organic. I recommend eating Tempeh and avoiding tofu.
