There are not sugars added to cows milk to adjust the taste. The sugars are naturally occurring. There are no sugars to almond milk naturally, but some products add sugar.
While I think we may eat too many bad fats, my main concern is the sugars.
Notice how that article of yours skipped the mention of Almond milk in the sugar conversation? I find that peculiar, well, odd anyway,
Anyway,
Unsweetened Silk Soy contains............................... 1 gram of sugar per cup.
Unsweetened Blue Diamond Almond Breeze contains 0 grams of sugar.
Milk contains.......................................... .............. 12 grams of sugar.
Rice milk, I think, contains...................................... 9 grams of sugar.
Being hypoglycemic, I have no problem with artificial sweeteners, but try to limit any extraneous sugars from my diet and since I consume many cups of tea daily I want to be careful. I also have lactose intolerance but fatty cheese like cheddar don't seem to bother me. Fresh mozzarella and ricotta set me off but the packaged cheeses tend not to. Most sugars that are slowly metabolized and ending in 'ol' - sorbitol, xylitol, etc - also make my stomach upset.
It's good that we are becoming so fat conscious, but I think there is also a big issue with the sugar that sneaks its way into our foods without our even being aware of it. I don't eat a lot of ketchup, or pickles, or bacon, or cole slaw which contain sugar, but I do use something in my tea on a regular basis.
