Twenty-five bipartisan members of Congress say if it's from soybeans, almonds, or rice, it should not be labeled as milk. Vermont Rep. Peter Welch and Idaho Rep. Mike Simpson, leading the charge against "fake milk," signed a letter along with other Congressional members, asking the FDA to investigate and take action against manufacturers of "milk" that doesn't come from cows.

The lobbyists associated with the Dairy industry pushed very hard to get these Congressmen/women to push this forward.

The bid dairy companies are worried about competition from almond and soy milk and rice milk. They are attempting to squash their competition via legislation and they hired high paid lobbyists to campaign on their behalf.

Funny that the proposal is trying to limit "Milk" to only be associated with Cow's milk and they left out Goat Milk. I guess Goat farmers don't have the expensive lobbyists compared to the big companies that sell Cow's milk.

calling juice from plants "milk" is as absurd as calling a vegan's soybean sandwich a "meat" sandwich.

I would think most people would agree because consumers are always clamoring for...truth in labeling laws.....

What about "coconut milk" and "Milk of Magnesia"? Haven't they established precedent for referring to some milk-like substances as "milk", even if they aren't actually the lacteal fluid of a mammal species, bovine in particular?

Will one still be able to use the phrase "the milk of human kindness"?

I do agree. For example, there are those sad cases in which people naively assume that all drinks called "milk" contain similar nutrients, and feed their infant rice milk.

I seem to recall them trying this before, over ten years ago. Maybe the almond, soy, etc. people will be allowed to label it "milk substitute" or "milk alternative." Do dairy manufacturers really believe this will increase sales for them? Hardly.
