1)Because they flee from the typical american junk food which produces so many people with fat morbid there.
2)Because they have not enjoyed, the vast majority of american people the delicious mediterrean cuisine that it is also very healthy and your tradition is not enjoy with food already that USA have origin historical in UK
that does not have historically good gastronomy.-
In every country that is rich to some extend, food is not only a necessity for nutrition but an expression of culture, attitude, freedom etc. In the US people have many choices and people have all food options they could imagine. Some use this freedom to be vegetarian, some don't. Some people do it for ethical reasons, some for health reasons, and some just to be different.
In more recent trips to Europe, I was shocked at the number of obese people, especially in Switzerland and Germany. Lots of fatties in Italy too. Perhaps they should consider vegetarianism.
You guys can post as many stats as you like, but the my eyes don't lie. There's just as many fat slobs in central Europe as there are in the US and pretty much every Latin American country I've been to is fatter than the US or Europe.
I think the amount of vegetarians in the USA is very small, compared to many other Western nations. A few years ago I was with a vegetarian friend & we went to a fast food joint & they had no veggie burgers.
I have known plenty of fat vegetarians & plenty of skinny meat eaters.
Generally Americans like to try different diets. Some are fad, some not. Lots of people, especially young ones are eager to try something new, especially if widely advertised, or suggested to be a "super" diet. Most everyone I know is on some kind of diet, more or less convinced that it works for them. Popping diet pills is probably even more common.
But when you look at the statistics Americans are not leaders, heck... I would say - they are pretty much on the bottom with mere 3.3%. Perhaps because not many really stick to one kind for long, always looking for something else that might work better.
There are also people who don't eat meat because of their cultural background, personal or religious beliefs, taste preference etc.
As you can see Indians had the lowest rate of meat consumption in the world. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vegetarianism_by_country
Veganism is definitely more common among young people now. I feel that social media has played a major part in this, but there’s also the fact that younger people aren’t bound as much by traditional values, so they are more likely to change to a more leftfield thing such as veganism. Lots of them list three main reasons why they became vegetarians: animals, health and the environment.
Some do it for health reasons. Some do it for cultural reasons. Some do it for moral reasons. Some do it because it's trendy. Some do it because they just prefer it.
Vegetarians and vegans in America are lucky because probably no other country has the variety of produce that the States does. You can get almost anything there. Try being a vegetarian in some other places and there's a chance you'll starve.
