Just to make it more complicated,
In India and under context of Indic religions, vegetarian implies dairy included with plant based foods, but not eggs. Lacto vegetarian. i.e. Eggs are viewed in the non-vegetarian or meat category.
In the US and possibly other western countries, vegetarian typically includes dairy and eggs with plant based foods as well.
Another point:
Cheese can be technically non-vegetarian if it has animal enzymes/animal rennet in it, but even most vegetarians overlook this. But I have family members that are particular about choosing (at the grocery store) cheese blocks with microbial enzymes or non-animal over animal enzyme cheese.
