Oh well, I omit them anyway and mine tastes fine to me. I mean, it IS for me so I don't care what anyone else thinks - LOL.
I looked at 2 jars in my fridge, both had neither shrimp nor fish sauce. Neither were bought in a vegetarian section, and while I do not remember the price, it wasn't high enough for me to notice anything amiss.

you can make one in home, Kimchi is super tasty I prefer it with leftover rice or some times as ramen toppings. It's may be lil bit spicy but if you make one in home by yourself, you can manage the spices. You can buy korean gochugaru ( korean chilli pepper flakes) online and add some onion, ginger, garlic in it and prepare a sauce by yourself. The taste is almost same only make sure to ferment it properly.
