I am considering taking a job in Santa Barbara. I will be relocating from Florida. I have been researching local areas, and I seem to always come back to Ojai. We love the outdoors, and sick of living in the flatness of the east coast. My sales job will bring in between 80-100. My wife will be working, but has nothing lined up now. We will have a child entering high school and one entering 5th grade. We hope to find a rental for under 2000/mon. Any comments on Ojai, the schools, rentals, and even other areas to explore, will be greatly appreciated.

The Ojai Valley is remarkably beautiful with horse ranches\ avocado groves\ cultural opportunities and somewhat secluded from the rest of Santa Barbara county.

Santa Barbara County? Ojai is in Ventura County.

Oh geez! Sorry about that. Is Ojai closer to Santa Barbara than Ventura?

No, Ojai is closer to Ventura. Even if one had a job in Ventura, the commute to Ojai would be burdensome as it's a narrow winding road up into the mountains. Ojai to Santa Barbara would be insane. You'd either have to drive down to 101, then north to SB, or take 150 around Lake Casitas...that would take hours!

I am in outside sales, and will be working my territory out of my car. The drive/commute time is part of my job. Google maps states that is 45 minutes, taking 150 & 101. Is that not accurate?

Can anyone share info on raising kids Ojai, schools, etc.

Are there any areas near the beach in SB or Ventura that have good schools, safe, and not too expensive? I am still seeking a rental for a family of 4 for under $2000 month.

Thanks

As Brenda-by-the-sea pointed out the roads in and out of the Ojai Valley are just 2 lanes and winding over the mountains. I have taken both routes [Highway 33 from Ventura & 150 from Carpinteria] and though scenic, they are slow-going country roads.

I suppose anywhere in Ventura & Santa Barbara counties are fairly expensive but you should look up rentals on Craig's List. Schools in Ojai & surrounding towns [Ventura\ Santa Barbara] should be fine.

Ojai is a great place to raise kids. My son had good educational experiences in elementary and junior high school, but the high school was so-so, not great but not bad. That was 14 years ago so it might be better.

I've had several friends who commuted from Ojai to Santa Barbara. Wouldn't want to do it myself, but plenty of people make the drive every day.

I was just there yesterday, it sure looks like a nice place but seemed every bar was packed with Bikers, looks to be a weekend hangout.
