I've been lurking on this board for awhile in anticipation of moving to VC and appreciated all the tips and info, especially the moderate voices about Oxnard in case we did find something there. My hubby and I did our house hunting trip last month and had planned to look in Ventura, Camarillo and Oxnard but only found pet-friendly rentals available in Oxnard. The one we liked best is beautiful (in the Cabrillo neighborhood), but I just received the lease to review and in the disclosure section it mentions the proximity to the agricultural fields as a possible issue for concern. As a cancer survivor and one who has lost pets to cancer my questions are as follows: 1. Does anyone know what crops are grown in the fields near Cabrillo? 2. How often are the chemicals sprayed? 3. Are the spraying schedules available to the public? Many thanks for any insights.

Sue

Where exactly is Cabrillo? There are many fields all over Oxnard and Ventura County as a whole. Can you give me some cross streets if possible?

As far as fields here, I do know we have a lot of strawberries here and I've seen many types of produce here such as cabbage, greens, peppers, broccoli and other items of that nature.

Ok, if I have this correct, there aren't "many" fields in that area. There are some fields off Victoria and Gonzales (strawberries). There are some flower fields off Ventura Road in between 2nd and 5th Street. I can't remember what the fields are on Patterson. I will have to drive down there.

That would be East of Patterson, West of Ventura road, South of Gonzales, and North of Dorris. The only appartments that I know of in that area are near Ventura road about as far away from any of the strawberry fields or flower fields that you will run into in that area. The fields in the area are west of Patterson and south of Dorris. You would be at least a mile away from the fields. Saying that, if you are thinking it is hazardous they did build a high school between Patterson and Victoria that is surrounded by fields, and a grade school on the North side of Gonzales near Patterson across the street from the fields. I doubt that either of the schools could have been built if the pestisides were considered to be a large problem. I don't think that they spray pestisides on strawberry fields but pump it under plastic sheeting before growing the berries. I could be wrong but I think that is the process.
