Hi,

I'm moving from the UK to the US with a starting salary of around $60,000. The cost of living is so different in the US, that I'm really struggling to work out how far my salary will go.

I have no debts to pay off and will be earning around $60K. With rental prices in the TO area plus running a car, and all other general expenses, do you think this is enough to live on? (I'm a single female.)

If it is just you, it might be doable. I suspect you can probably find a one bedroom apartment for about $1500-$1600 or so. Your monthly utilities might be about $150-$200 (phone, internet, cable, electricity) if you so desire. A cell phone bill...maybe $75. You mentioned running a car..will you have to buy a car or is this just general maintenance and gas?

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I'll need to buy or lease a car. I'm hoping I can live comfortably on $60K, but it's so hard to gauge in a new area.

60K is certainly enough to live on. You won't be buying a house on that salary in that area, but you shouldn't be hurting at all either.

A single person can pretty easily life off $60,000 in this area. A 1-bedroom, utilities, basic car, and food should run you around $2,500~$3,000/month depending on the details.

You can live on that amount there, but don't plan on having a whole lot of money left over each month. Everyday living is far more expensive in Southern California than you expect.

Don't forget to factor taxes and fees into that.
