I'm hoping to get some insider information from someone involved with at least one of the area's public high schools. We would be moving from a basic aid district that is extremely well regarded and well funded. Is there a clear 'best academic' school of the three/ or one to be avoided due to prevalence of less motivated students? Do they each have the support of the community in terms of voting for increased parcel taxes? I am particularly concerned now that the looming budget cuts have public education square in their sites.

In a quick drive of Dos Pueblos and San Marcos, there seems to be better facilities at the former -- does this translate into a better experience for the students? We didn't get to look at Santa Barbara High, and are frankly concerned about why it's performance is not as high on testing as the other two schools, but would love to know more.

I'd appreciate feedback regarding school atmosphere for the students, college preparation, extracurricular standouts, any safety concerns, and any insight beyond what API scores and greatschool site can offer.

Still another example that it would help to unite the Santa Barbara County and Ventura County Sub-Forum

I went to UCSB and met a lot of kids who had gone to SB high schools. In terms of location/appearance, I loved Santa Barbara HS... beautiful old school. From what I knew of the schools, the nice thing about SB high schools is that the demographics are very mixed. You don't have one school with all of the struggling kids. I didn't necessarily hear great things about San Marcos... I'd say the area around San Marcos is a bit rougher than the area near Dos Pueblos. SBHS is the only one that's in the heart of SB... the other two are really in Goleta. (Not that Santa Barbara is a big enough city for that to really matter.)
