My husband and I are in the market to buy a house. We prefer the Thousand Oaks area but are also considering Moorpark or Simi. We need at least 3 bed 1.5 bath and preferably above 1300 square feet. We've recently seen some nice properties that are 2 bed 1 bath but have a very large lot and are significantly under budget. We were thinking about purchasing one of these properties and just adding on a master bed and bath.

I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with adding on to homes in the Thousand Oaks area. What is the permit process like? Is it difficult to get permits? Is Thousand Oaks strict about adding on to properties? What kinds of problems can arise during an add on? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

What neighborhood are you looking at? Some are unincorporated. Are the houses in a tract? HOA's matter.

For some major additions, the city requires that you submit an application and drawings of your plan to the development department to determine if your building plan meets city standards (they will work with you on this) and if it is approved, you can obtain a building permit.
