Hello guys,

I'm new to the area. I've been driving past this rail crossing at Channel Islands Blvd (Oxnard, heading West, just after Albany) and took a wiff of a really horrible, pungent odor - only disappears as I approach Saviers. I guess it was a Sewer line/River/Creek? Drove past a few more times on different days and the smell still hasn't gone. I guess the heat doesn't help. There are houses lined by that line. I can't imagine living there.

Anyway, took to Google Earth and I followed the line south and it looks like it ends up at the beach east of the Port Hueneme Pier, creating a small lagoon. I'm not a scientist, civil engineer or what not, but just out of curiosity, this goes directly to the Pacific Ocean, correct? What kind of health risks does this entail to residents/beach goers?

We have flood zone run off channels in the area. Look to J street in Oxnard, Channel Islands road and a section of Ventura road in Port Hueneme and the run off near Albany. They all run to the ocean. Wait till a big flood happens and see what happens. Currently the Albany run off is probably sitting with a lot of rotting debris in it. Kind of why you want to watch what you dump in the gutters. Remember that they all run off into the ocean. When the next big flood happens all that will wash out and the smell will go away, for a while any way. LOL

That's the dilemma in Ventura. All the rivers back up in stagnant lagoons behind sand berms. When an El Nino year comes along, they all flush out to the sea. The sandbars make for awesome surfing (also bigger, more frequent swells during El Nino years) but the water is toxic.

2005 was truly epic in this way. A certain rivermouth washed out and fired for 3 months straight. It looked just like Maccas in Indo. Early on, though, you had to paddle through filthy green water that smelled hideous. Also, there was a huge death ball of floating bamboo (and lots of other crap) churning in the whitewash that would chew you up. I had a bunch of cuts and scrapes that I would seal up with a thick layer of neosporin, waterproof bandaid, more neosporin, another waterproof band-aid, then I'd wrap the whole thing in duct tape under my wetsuit to try to keep from contracting Hep-A.

After a month the waves were still good and there was less pollution, but it got really crowded as word got out and the pollution diffused into the ocean.

I think that smell is the water treatment plant. East on Hueneme rd. right on Perkins road, half way up street RHS. prevailing winds carry scent.

If you're referring to J Street, then from what I hear, there is a plan to completely cover it and create a parkland space with possibly a bike/ped trail on top.
