If you have had some experience in transporting dogs via plane, please let me know. Our two dogs are 70 pounds each and the third is 10 pounds and driving them across country is not going to be a option. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

I have never done this and it would be a huge concern cause don't they travel in the baggage area? My thought would be to ask your vet and you could also post on the pet forum to get thoughts.

Read this. I'd never take the risk shipping them like a piece of luggage.
Pet Owners Pressure Airlines to Stop Treating Animals As Cargo | NBC Bay Area

From that article. "A loophole in the law is allowing airlines not to report when certain animals are killed, hurt, or vanish in transit. Last month, an NBC Bay Area Investigation revealed that in a six-year span more than 300 animals have died, been injured, or have disappeared in the care of commercials airlines".

You might check with Amtrak to see if they will now except pets, but maybe that isn't in effect yet.

Are ya all not able to drive that far, or is it that traveling with the pets so far would be a hassle?

Hey guys, thank you so much for your responses. After reading all of this, we are very concerned about the safety of the dogs on the plane. A major challenge to the drive is that we also have an infant with us. We will look into renting a big vehicle for this trip.

Yes that was my concern with the dogs traveling in baggage. I would not take a chance. What about having a friend drive your car with the dogs if you think the trip will be too much with a baby? Then you could fly them back.

DaniellaG,
That is a good idea that we had not considered. I wonder if any of our friends have on their bucket list a drive across country with three dogs We will look into this option. Thanks

Maybe if you find a young but responsible person they would think it was fun even. Where are you moving from?

Have the wife fly with the baby and you drive with the dogs. Easiest and cheapest solution.
