We're considering a move to Ventura County, but I'm concerned about the air quality. (We're a family of asthmatics with allergies.) I've looked at some of the data from the VCAPCD, but I think my lack of familiarity with the area is making it hard for me to understand what's available there.

Can anyone describe the air quality issues in the area? (Ozone, PM 2.5, other?) Does air quality vary considerably throughout the county, and, if so, are some places better than others?

Smog is everywhere. Only certain beach areas in the county have no smog when they get onshore winds. This would apply to Ventura, Oxnard near the beaches, and Port Hueneme. Camarillo, Fillmore, Santa Paula and Moorpark are a little worse, and vary. But the Ojai, Simi and Conejo Valleys have the most trouble with air quality. But even they are mostly classified as "moderate."

Allergens: Check this by season. However, Ventura County has 6 micro-climates, more than any other county in the U.S., so it's hard for any county averages to consistently apply:

For daily air pollution reports, I think this site is better---just enter the zip code in the box to the right (not the search box on top):

Thank you!

Is smog a 4-season thing, or is it mostly summer ozone?

Also, does the zip code search on www.aqmd.gov work outside of the South Coast region? I entered a Camarillo zip and it said "Invalid Zipcode".

Well, some people would argue that there aren't 4 seasons in SoCal. With this dry year they may have a point Even in winter there are often days in the high 80's, in the east county at least. Ozone, as I understand it, is reactive to heat. It can be hot here year round. Smog, on the other hand, is reactive to sunlight. It is sunny here almost year round.

Sorry about the South Coast link. Guess the bulk of the county isn't on it.

Really? Smog in Ventura? I thought it's the marine layer? I am moving to the area mostly due to the good air quality.

Scroll down the Twitter feed update list from the Air Quality board. Look how many times it says the air quality in the County on various days is "Moderate all areas" which includes the City of Ventura.

Ventura County Air Pollution Control District

In fact, Ventura's cooler weather and marine layer traps particle pollution more readily that other parts of the County. And when there are offshore winds, Ventura gets the dust pollution from Oxnard's and Santa Paula's agriculture. And Ventura is of course the intersection for 2 freeways which make smog. That gets trapped, too.

If you want some definitions of the level for the 4 main air pollutants, see below.
Ozone
Particle Pollution
Carbon Monoxide (CO)
Sulfur Dioxide (SO2)

It's better than L.A. County, but it's not definitely not immune to smog. You might want to go to the EPA's "Air Compare" site to see how Ventura compares to where you currently live. You also can see 10 year historical data, which shows that Ventura's air has been improving overall. Compare My Air | Air Compare | AIRNow | US EPA
