State and local officials are closely watching the latest figures as they weigh when and how to reopen. One metric is whether counties have kept the number of new cases reported over the last 14 days to less than 25 per 100,000 residents.

Ventura County currently fails that test. Over the last two weeks, officials have confirmed 818 new cases, which amounts to 96 per 100,000.

A better metric would be deaths or ICU hospitalizations. "Cases" alone is just fear mongering.

Friday, the number of patients hospitalized due to complications of the virus stayed high, at 58. A recent increase in the hospitalization rate has put the county back on a state watch list. Nineteen of the hospitalized patients were being treated in an intensive care unit.

Thus 19 in ICU divided by 818 cases = .023 percent. And the county's populations is what - 750,000 or so?

The anti-mask idiots and the "reopen" protesters are responsible for igniting the current wave of new cases in places like Florida, Arizona and Texas. They put political pressure on local politicians to accelerate reopening there, as well as not requiring masks, going against all medical advice.

The fact that Ventura County doesn't have many cases is the best reason to require masks and social distancing. It's the most cost effective way to help prevent the virus from taking root. Issuing mask orders after the virus takes off, like a number of red states are doing now, is too late -- the horse has left the barn at that point.

The anti-mask people are like adult toddlers, stamping their feet, wah wah I don't want to wear one and you can't make me. That's the only rationale they have for their position. Anyone who goes into a supermarket today without a mask is a selfish Typhoid Mary.

It is useful to know who are good folk and who are evil Typhoid Mary's.

Yet the planetary outlook & perspective has more value:

Sorry for my rant -- I feel better now

It's not as simple as "good folk" vs "evil." Some of the non-maskers are good people at heart but who have been lead astray by misinformation and propaganda. Some non-maskers have genuine medical issues that make masks problematic for them. OTOH, some non-maskers are truly evil. Some don't care about others, they are that selfish. Others know the science is right, but they advocate against masks because they want to push an anti-government agenda.

I'm glad Ventura is leaving the beaches open for the July 4th weekend. With the crowds coming up from LA anyway, it's better they spend more time on the beach and less time inside infecting our local restaurant workers.

Hopefully the county and cities will put up signs encouraging mask-wearing when in busy parking lots or on crowded streets and beaches.
