Vermont's property taxes are high, and I've read posts on this forum that state that Vermont provides a lot of social services from these taxes. I was wondering what the social services are. Do you know?

:-)

Vermont has the same social services (medicaid, food stamps, head start, etc) that other states have, but the social workers here go out of their way to make sure everyone applies for any type of "entitlement" benefit they might be eligible for.

When I moved here I lived next door to a social worker and we became casual friends. She figured out how much my dh was making at the time and would regularly encourage me to apply for WIC and food stamps even though I repeatedly told her these aren't programs I would apply for unless I truely couldn't feed my family. She's say things like, "your tax dollars are paying for it. You might as well take advantage of it."

At the time, many of my friends were receiving services even though they had incomes that were similar to ours. No one thought twice about applying.

While it's great that Vermonters really want to care for the less fortunate, I think that sometimes social workers go a bit overboard providing services that might not be needed.
