My family and I are visiting friends in Albany, and we'd like to do a daytrip to VT. What town would you suggest? Reasonable distance from Albany is important--other than that, we're just looking for a nice, traditional VT town. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Traditional Vermont towns don't have much in the way of things to do. I suppose splitting time between Manchester and Arlington could be good. Arlington is just a few buildings, but if it still has the cafe, that is where Rockwell hired a lot of his models for his Americana art.

Manchester is cute. It has outlets if you're into shopping. Don't go to Rutland.

Bennington (nearest to NY state), Wilmington, and Brattleboro
are along scenic (albeit, slow) Route 9 (running west to east) in southern VT.

Wherever you go, you'll pass Bennington. Definitely stop for a visit.
