Hey hey, looking at moving to the Dover or Wilmington area. My fiancee' got a job near there and I applied as a police officer to both towns (currently a police officer in MD).

Are these areas nice? I noticed they are near each other. We are planning a trip up in November to see the area. I currently live and work in a small city (16sq miles) and Wilmington and Dover are similar to what I am used to here. Plus it seems easier to get hired on in the smaller towns than major cities.

Thanks

They are very small towns which sees their populations more than double during the winter months because of the ski resort (Mount Snow) located there.
You say you work in a small city. What is the population? Dover and Wilmington are not at all city like. Very rural.

As of 2012, the population was 12,900, almost 13,000. We have a small historical downtown area, with local shops, banks, etc. The town I work/live in is called Havre de Grace, it sits on the Susquehanna river where it meets the Chesapeake Bay. We have 2 marinas, several boat launch ramps, 3 parks. Outside of the downtown area is a lot of rural land, and houses spread out. On the outskirts ("the Hill") sits a vineyard, and a housing devlopment that is built on the old apple fields of a farm (which is now the vineyard). We have a police department, a Vol Fire Co with 5 houses, an ambo co, and a hospital. Our department is about 40 officers (4 squads of 5-6 each), not including the specialized divisions. In the summer we get a lot of tourists and out of towners, esp being about 45mins from baltimore and 10mins from Ripken Stadium.

Here's the website for Dover/Wilmington area tourism:
Mount Snow Valley Vermont | Visit Vermont's Official Mount Snow Vermont Vacation and Events Information

Wilmington's website:
Town of Wilmington, Vermont*

Dover's site:
Dover, Vermont |

Dover is more rural and off-the-beaten path, spread out,
than Wilmington, which has a downtown on a major east-west artery.
Dover includes the Mount Snow ski area, with condos and a shuttle bus,
and Wilmington has the services & amenities like grocery store & bank.

Both towns are tiny in population (actual people counted in the census). Both towns combined add up to less than 1500 people. As mentioned, the ski season would double that number.

Agree that they're small towns with low population-
however, Wikipedia says Wilmington population is 2,225.
Wilmington, Vermont - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
And that Dover's population is 1,410.
Dover, Vermont - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
So that's about 3,600 total for both towns combined, still pretty rural/rustic.
Of course, I don't know if those numbers are "ski-season inflated" or not...

I realized after the fact I only included Dover. West Dover adds to the population and brings the total up to 1410. I used the 2010 census data top look at the numbers. I'm not sure if they use the ski population to get the higher numbers.

When I think of Dover, I assume that includes both East & West Dover, too-
but I could be mistaken in including them.

West Dover has the ski resort and is closer to Wilmington,
East Dover is more "backwoods" and has the church and post office.

I imagine the closest "essentials" such as main shopping outlets would be in Brattleboro or Bennington? I know there are some smaller shops in Dover and Wilmington, but stuff like Targets or Walmarts (and library) are a little bit of a drive?

VT tends to be hostile to Wal-Marts, but NH isn't-so if you went to Brattleboro, it's short jaunt over to Hinsdale, NH from there to the Wal-Mart, or another 15 miles to Keene NH (which has Target).
Dover has a library (as does Brattleboro-and Bennington, I assume).
Wilmington has a Shaw's supermarket, Brattleboro & Bennington have multiple grocery stores each.
