My husband and I were both raised in cold weather areas (so we know cold). We currently live in Virginia and really like the weather. Despite this, we're feeling the call of Vermont. We've trolled this forum for quite awhile and have visited a few times, so we have an idea what to expect. We're just wondering if our dislike of the cold will trump all the good things we know we'd love about your beautiful state.

So...anybody out there love living in Vermont even though they hate cold weather?

It all depends on whether you have activities you can do and enjoy in the winter. If you keep cooped up in the winter because of the cold, you will end up with 'cabin fever.' I'm not sure if it's a Vermont term, but many old Vermonters where I used to live called it that. You will have to do something during the winter you enjoy to survive. Even if it's indoor activities. Winter is a long season in Vermont.

Thanks, 68vette! Are there festivals and such in the winter? We're not downhill skiers (I'm actually terrified), but x-country skiing, snowshoeing, etc. are definitely things we would enjoy. We're looking more for a sense of community that we're missing in Virginia. My husband is always good at making sure we get out and about (I'm more of a homebody). I guess I'm just wondering if there are things "out and about" to do in the winter?

What part of Vermont are you looking to relocate to? There are definitely events throughout the winter but location is key.

I do live in Vermont, though cold weather is uncomfortable to me-and I endure it by choice, it's what I'm accustomed to.
Grew up in Maine & then NY state, and am used to the snowfall amount-I dislike the cold, yet I adore the snow, and they're inseparable.
I appreciate the coldness for what it does (not for how it feels),
such as keeping insects & spiders from becoming ginormous, which is one reason I could never live somewhere warmer...phobias

Excellent question! The location would pretty much be determined by where my husband got a job (engineering). That would probably keep us closer to the more populated areas, though. What areas are more likely to hold events?

I think I suffer from a touch of SADD myself. I look back on my days in upstate NY (where I grew up) and wonder why I didn't see it then. Weather-wise, I'm much happier in a sunnier, warmer climate, but there's so much about Vermont that I think we would love.

Oh, and don't even get me started about the bugs in Virginia...I didn't even know spiders could get that big!

The Burlington area or Middlebury have lots going on year round due to the colleges. Sports events, lectures, galleries, etc.
What type of engineering work are you looking for? Civil? Environmental? Electrical? Software?
For me its not so much the cold that bothers me in winter - you gotta know how to dress. Getting out to ski (I downhill) or ice skate keeps me busy. Its the lack of sun that bothers me most. Its very gray here in the winter. Not a whole heck of a lot of sun and short days. Thats why we always head south (FL) for a week or 2 during the winter!
