Things like hats, gloves, socks, flannel shirts, etc where do you go buy those? Which stores, brands, or online shopping? Asking because I may be coming up to visit soon but don't want to get them in Texas where winterwear is the worst.

Northface, Burton, even LL Bean and Lands End are popular. Patagonia/Burton would be good for real skiing clothes. Honestly I got my jacket at Macy's. For a casual visit where you will just be walking around outside I would recommend cloth mittens, a hat, boots, and a winter jacket (you can always layer under your jacket). If you plan on going sledding, hiking, or doing some shoveling (hopefully not that!) then you will want "puffy" insulated gloves (necessary- cloth gloves get soaked and freezing if you even touch snow), snow pants, boots, a hat, a jacket, and maybe some good socks (I recommend darn tough VT socks).

I agree with Hopes just buy the jacket and some cheap gloves for now and get the boots and hat, or whatever else you need, when you come up.

I love shopping in Vermont. The wide array of quality items is unmatched for winter wear.

I think men enjoy shopping in Vermont too because everything is rugged and manly.

I am in agreement about the kind of clothes shopping there is in Vermont. In Texas their idea of winter wear is so completely loathsome that I am just so ready to put my money in Vermont made winter wear, I am willing to pay for quality and style. Where are the tough warm Vermont socks sold (like which store name, etc). Thanks.

Home page - Darn Tough Socks

They are also sold at Eastern Mountain Sports. I provided a link to that store earlier in the thread.

The Vermont Country Store is a great place. http://www.vermontcountrystore.com/store/

There are so many independent small outfitters in Vermont. You have a greater selection if you wait until you get there.

The local Agway for Carhart if you want to embrace the "locals" look or Patagonia/The North Face if you want to embrace the "locals with money" look.

Seeing as Cabala's is now selling The North Face gear and Mack's Prairie Wings is selling Patagonia the lines have become blurred though.

True chic is a Patagonia coat with a pair of Carhart lined pants and logging boots.

Unbelievably, poly blend "hoodies" have made their way into VT as cold weather wear. And people wonder why they're cold…...

I like Sam's Outdoor Outfitters. He's closed down a lot of the stores he used to have but he still has one in Vt, namely in Brattleboro.

Truly atrocious apparel, the polyblend hoodies.

Ah ha. Finally found sub 30 degree socks on Vermont Country Store, what I want for deep winter wear, yes.
