You can't compare a rich, elite town like Old Lyme CT with the entire state of VT. For those who don't know, Old Lyme is on the CT shore and is not part of the area that feeds off NYC. It's just a very small, old, rich town. Compare it with some small, old, rich town in VT and you might have something worth talking about.

I think there are probably poor areas of VT that have drug problems -- people always mention Rutland as being bad for drugs but I don't know. The OP is not about Rutland anyway, it's about Manchester, a touristy area that always seems sort of New York-like to me (although I'm certainly no expert.)

Delmioquartiere actually searched my posts from other threads and pasted one of my responses here in this thread.......thus the feeling of being stalked! My comments concerning a completely different area have absolutely nothing to do with this thread!

I can only give you my anecdotal experience for my town, Chester.

Chester is my second home, I live on Long Island. My car is a trikked out black SUV with tinted windows and NY tags. I got to calling the car the magnet; every time I rolled into town, Chester PD was following me. I learned why:

They believe Vermonter Ryan Bartley as well as seven New Jersey men were helping the couple sell crack cocaine, heroin and OxyContin to hundreds of customers in the greater Springfield area.

My car screamed out-of-state drug dealing gangbanger!

The local police now know I am a typical, harried, suburban mom who likes to escape to VT and eschews minivans in favor of trikked out SUVs.

I'm sorry, that was not directed at you but at the person whom you said seemed to be stalking you. They were talking about Old Lyme and you were talking about VT.

Regarding the Manchester/Dorset areas. The majority of these towns are very well-to-do, with several celebrities living in the area. Homes are beautiful and well-maintained. My son's neighbor has children that attend a private school in Manchester (Maple Street). Fantastic school with amazing teachers. Children are self confident, community minded, etc. I am in Manchester several times a month and have never seen or heard anything regarding drugs etc. In fact when the hurricane hit the area a few years ago, people worked together, rich and poor, to help their neighbors and people who had losses. My son's children were taking food and items up the mountain as they had no roads to get down. Heroin is a serious problem in every city and state because it is cheap and easy to get addicted.

I hate to break it to you but pills and heroin are prevalent in the Manchester area. It's not like Rutland with the poverty, open dealing, and drugs, but it's there. But attentive families with children would be fine there. It's not like they're selling it on the playgrounds to children. It's mostly young adults who didn't go off to college and have no real future who stupidly get caught up in it. Then again, I do know two affluent families in the area whose children became addicts. The difference is affluent families have the financial means to save their children.

Meth and Heroin are here in VT as they are in many other parts of the country I have lived. The difference is (from my perspective) there doesn't seem to be the large amount of crime and violence that tends to go along with it in other parts of the country. As far as your kids getting addicted; its not like there are gangs roaming the streets with guns trying to get your kids addicted to advance their profits. More of an addict problem, the state is open about trying to have the community work together to figure it out. With the lack of violence and crime and tons of outdoors, it tends to help in that regard by giving your kids other outlets than drugs. That said, its up to the parents to control that as well.

If you want to move here, the best advice I can give, is the same advice that everyone else seems to give:

1> Don't think when you get here it will be like living in a movie version of VT
2> Have a good job before you get here, especially if living in Chittenden county
3> Someone told me this once and I think it is true: "Embrace being unimportant".

Many folks from large cities (NY, DC, Seattle etc) at times, don't get this. Trying to 'out-do' your neighbors by bragging and being loud about having the best cars, clothes, biggest parties for your children, talking sh$t about people, etc doesn't fly up here. Most people I know who have moved here and think Vermonters are cold and mean, is because they didn't grasp this. No one cares who you are, what your income level is, who you know, or how your kid is the smartest thing on the planet.

Are you (and your family) decent, kind people that respects your neighbors? If so, you'll do fine.

And that is why my family loves it here and could not imagine being anywhere else!

Geomaster, I recommend you check World Bank, CIA and UN statistics: If Vermont were a country, it would be wealthier than 95 others; its per capita GDP puts it just above Belgium among the 36 countries which have better health care systems than the US. (It ranks 20th among all of them.)

We are far wealthier than some of us want to believe.

The other difference is that kids of affluent families have the financial means to buy their fixes and don't need to commit petty larceny and armed robbery.
