Well hopefully gas prices will grow exponentially and we will have no choice but to find alternative means of transportation, including my favorite, the train.

I think something like you described is the most likely scenario. Getting people to change (and corporations embark in new directions) is frustratingly, glacially slow. My fantasy is walking almost everywhere, taking trains everywhere I can't walk, and perhaps occasionally, for some special reason, driving. I know, not in my lifetime in these United States, but I love the fantasy.

I'm going to SW Utah this spring and I tried to find a way to do it by train. Sure, if I want to take 3-4 days! I have a friend in NM who just took the train to Vermont and back. Took her 4 days each way. I am not seeing that my spring schedule will allow traveling 6-8 days to attend a 3-day retreat.
