We are thinking about moving to VT from Boston, and are hoping for some advice about various towns and regions. We love Brattleboro and were wondering if people might be able to recommend other smaller towns with a similar vibe? We are hoping to move to an area with a strong love of the arts and music (we are into folk music, and jazz, homemade music, experimental, etc.), and with a good sense of environmental responsibility and people-friendly politics, strong sense of community, etc.--Brattleboro is definitely an option but we would also like to explore other options as well.
Many thanks for your advice! Kind regards, JS

We're considering property in MA very near to Brattleboro. It's a hip town. As far as other towns with a complementary vibe, I'd look into Middlebury, Norwich, and definitely Burlington. As far as music goes, it will be hard to beat Burlington and it will certainly feel like a small town if you're from Boston Just head down to Main Street in Burlington on a weekend night and check out the live music. It's worth considering.

Just curious as to why you would see this? is there a nudist colony near? or is this just what the people do there in the summer?

thanks vt08, i was just curious why. it has been mentioned before. i personally don't care what people do.i find that if this happened in NJ they would scamble to find a way to tax it or attach a fee. people in bratt. should be glad they still have the freedom to walk naked if they want. on the other hand i am not sure how i would explain it to my three kids?

Nudity in Brattleboro is highly overstated. The media jumps all over it because it gets big attention for a small town. A few people are offended by the very thought of nudity and they complain. Then a few people who like to yank other people's chains go running out naked to upset them. But my friends who live in & around Brat report never having seen a single nude person. And if they did see one, or if I saw nude Vermonters of any shape, we certainly couldn't care less.

I regularly see sights that seem ugly to me, mostly forms of environmental degradation and any beings who are suffering. The idea of finding one of my fellow beings "ugly" because they don't fit someone else's idea of beauty is baffling to me. I might not decorate my home with images of most people in the nude, but I'd rather look at regular people nude than see nature denuded any day.

I don't know whether my mind was in the gutter when I read that, or if it's the way you turn a phrase, but that line had me hysterical!
