This weekend (March 29-30) is Vermont Maple Sugar Open House Weekend. Will the sap run? It's 20 degrees out right now. Yikes!

According to Wikipedia, in 2007 VT produced 650,000 gallons, followed by Maine and New York (225,000 gallons). Our neighbor, NH produces less than 100,000 gallons a year.

I like mine dark and heavy, forget that overpriced thin light stuff, it doesn't have the flavor the "lower" darker grades do.

Me too. Grade B or Grade A dark amber. Yum. Makes me want some fresh blueberry pancakes right now. Darn, I won't be able to go to Eatons Sugar House until the spring.

So far the sugarmakers are not boiling much but hopefully that will change this week. I was talking to Burt Morse up at the Morse Farm on Easter Sunday and he said the sap so far is extra sweet this year as it was only taking about 30 gallons of sap to make a gallon of the sweet stuff.
