I don't know where you are on your time line, but teacher contracts in Vermont are up for renewal in April, so you're almost to the time when job openings will start appearing. Here's the source for education job listings in Vermont: https://www.schoolspring.com/find/ve...in_vermont.cfm

I wouldn't move without a job where I'm going, but I may be more risk-averse than you.

You don't have to live in Rutland, which has plenty of social problems. There are lots of small towns, but when I say that I mean really small, and it may not be for you. Definitely visit before you move.

Don't forget the heating costs. I don't know if you can swap air conditioning costs in months with heating costs in VT. Miami to Vermont...now that's a serious big switch in just weather alone. Depending on how large your house is in VT and so many other variables, heating can cost anywhere from $4,000 to $8,000 a year or more in southern VT.

I have around 1500 square feet, built in 1962 with not great insulation, and my heating comes out to around $1300 per year with a combination of pellets and a mini split.

Certainly some places will be considerably more if they're using, say, propane, or if they're huge, old and uninsulated.
