I realize this is an old thread, but wanted to put something out there. When my young daughter and I moved here, what sold our landlord was the cover letter I prepared to go with the application. I explained my family, our living habits, and my sincerity in keeping things taken care of. We moved into the apartment above him, and have been here for 8 1/2 years. He watches out for us and thinks we should be here for years to come.

If this is true, and you were a tenant in good standing throughout your time at both of those apartments, then you shouldn't have too much trouble finding something, especially if your former landlords are willing to provide positive references. Add to that a good cover letter that explains the situation, carefully proofread and spellchecked and thoughtfully written, and you should be in OK shape.
