I agree about Middlebury. Having lived here for the last 8 years, I can say this area is a true outdoor recreation mecca. The Moosalamoo Area (15-25 minutes away) alone has more than 90 miles of trails, with epics such as Rattlesnake Cliffs, Mt. Moosalamoo, Silver Lake, Falls of Lana, Chandler Ridge, etc. Other great hikes within a half hour include the Skylight Pond Trail (Battell Mtn., Breadloaf Mtn.), Emily Proctor Trail, Cooley Glen Trail, Middlebury Snow Bowl and Lake Pleaid on the Long Trail, Silent Cliff, Great Cliffs of Mt. Horrid (Brandon Gap Long Trail), TAM Trail, Hogback Mtn. (Blueberry Mgt. Area in Goshen), Abbey Pond Trail, Robert Frost Trail, Wilkinson Trails, Snake Mtn, Buck Mtn, Oak Ridge Trail, Mt. Abraham and Sunset Ledge (35 minutes away off Lincoln Gap) and the list goes on.

Combine this with some great mountain bike opportunities, cross country skiing galore, kayaking, rivers and lakes for swimming and fishing and an amazing ski area close to town (Middlebury Snow Bowl) that has some of the best glades in the state and is the ideal family mountain. It all adds up to lots to do outdoors no matter the season.

I'd love to hear of SMALLER towns that may have anything as great as the TAM in Middlebury. Town or county trails or ”local” hiking/walking areas.
