Hello, my husband and I are trying to plan a 5 day trip through the New England states next year. I would like to hit Ogonquit ME for one day. Looking for recommendations on the best way to divvy up the remaining 2 days. What are some can't miss towns to spend a day or 2 in in VT and NH? Also, what's the best time of year weather wise to make the trip? Love quaint areas!

fall leaf peeping is prime time

Where will you be coming and heading to? It may not make sense to hit VT, though I love it (my fav New England state).

Portland and Portsmouth are obvious answers, but your route would dictate much.

More details would help. What time of year are you traveling? Where do you plan on staying? Are you driving in or flying?

We are thinking of coming up maybe the beginning of august. We will be camping so definitely want good weather. We will be coming from south central Pennsylvania and definitely want to hit Algonquin way in Maine as our first stop and then work our way back.

Woodstock, VT offers a lot of options.
-Quintessential Vermont vibe with the downtown green and picturesque setting.
-Quechee Gorge nearby with a breathtaking view and shops/restaurant
-Billings Farm & Museum outdoor history museum and Rockefeller home.
-North Americas most photographed farm (Jenn Farm)

Fall colors tend to peak (somewhere) in New England around Columbus Day...first couple weeks of October.

Five days will fly by pretty quickly in New England especially if you need to travel on two of those days.

Check out Seven Days online. The current issue has some info on drives up and down Route 100.
