Very, very rural. The main village is Island Pond. Hopefully someone more familiar with Island Pond can chime in. Be sure to come to a complete stop and count to 5 at the stop sign in town!!!

If you like to hunt, fish and snowmobile you'll love Island Pond. A place still grounded in the values that made up the foundation of the independent
yankee based Vermont culture 50 years ago.

Well, you won't have to count to 5 at the stop sign any longer. Constable Ted Miller was voted out of office a little over a year ago and moved out of town. I'm not certain what their current policing situation is, but traffic-wise, could only be an improvement.

The former Ethan Allen furniture plant, after sitting idle for some years, was recently sold and is being converted to wood pellet production. At least a dozen or so new jobs should come out of that.

If you think winters are long in St. J and Newport, they're actually a few weeks longer in Island Pond. There's a great place to shop for hiking boots and outerwear called Simon The Tanner. If this store was in, say, Burlington or Montpelier, it would be known throughout the state. It's locally owned by the Twelve Tribes - and very well run. A real pleasure to shop in.

Rutland also has a Twelve Tribes-run Simon the Tanner attached to their caf é called Back Home Again. They are some of the brightest spots in downtown Rutland. Regardless of one's feelings about the cult, we've known the people associated with these businesses for years. They're neighbors of ours, too, and good ones. I'm grateful for their contributions to the community. We patronize their businesses regularly.
