The problem is not from Gov. Douglas. Like him or not, the problem with Vermont not being a business friendly state has been around for a long time. I agree, putting it out there for the residents of the state to see may wake people up when it comes to the state being business friendly. If we keep electing politicians who are not as business friendly as others, then there will never be a change.

Is it caused expressly by the politicians, or do the people who've elected them not have a hand in this?

I would so love to have a say in things up there. For now all I can do is sit by, pop out an idea or two and hope someone will deem them worthy for presentation to the populace.

When you aren't business friendly, basically, you aren't family friendly. A poor business climate means your best and brightest LEAVE where folks DO appreciate citizens that generate money for the community. Vermont will never wake up, I fear.

I can't claim to be an expert on the Vermont business climate, but I have to disagree that there is some sort of direct relationship between being "business friendly" and being "family friendly". I remember living in Northern Virginia a number of years ago, in an area that was extremely business friendly, and it was anything but family friendly. The development in the area was so fast and so uncontrolled that it became a horrible place to live, family or not.

Like most things, I suspect there needs to be some balance.

anyone work for or know folks who work for GMCR? any ideas what it is like and how it pays?

one thing i noticed is that they always have a slew of jobs on their website. i am not sure if that's a good or bad thing.

My brother just started working for them a couple of weeks ago. He is working in there warehouse driving a forklift. The pay is good for him, the benefits are great for him and they plan to open another facility around the Stowe area in addition to the ones they already have. My brother got a job out at the one in Williston. He had been working contract for them for almost two years before he finally was able to get his foot in the door.

A friend of mine works in IT and I think he likes working there. They generally have a reputation as a good employer.

Just goes to show that what you read and hear may not always be accurate and sometimes jumping to conclusions doesn't do anyone any good accept bring down morale. Vermont may just not be as bad as anyone thinks. There are always trade-offs.

Or GMCR planted the rumor in order to have a better negotiating position. If a company is large in enough in Vermont they get to name their own utility and tax rates. Threatening to take your ball and find another field has proven to be a useful tactic.
