What sort of jobs are you getting/being offered? Are you in some sort of medical/engineering field/specialized field?

I'm curious.

I see a few new folks in my area, and I assume they are going to work at Dartmouth Hospital since no one else in hiring.

It's a bit confusing to see people hired from out of state when there are so few jobs for 'natives.' (apart from medical). I see a lot of this because my part of VT is right near Dartmouth and we have so many 'out of state' plates in my neighborhood.

Grad students? If they are older and dragging family with them perhaps medical students/interns/residents? If they are foreigners they might be J-1s some of the perpetually advertised jobs are a requirement for keeping underpaid J-1s on staff. I have no problem with immigration but make them full legal so wage competition is fair.

Yes, some are foreign but what really confuses me is so many are 'older.' I guess a lot of them are nurses or doctors or just working in 'some niche' area where you can't find local candidates.

Consumer Marketing. I moved here from out of state because there weren't people here locally that had enough experience. They do try to support local as much as they can though.

While we didn’t technically “move” to our place in VT from a work prospective as we continue to keep our decent paying gigs in MA and RI while living in VT 3 days per week….a possibility is also some of these people working remotely. With the state of networking being what it is, people with enough flexibility in their jobs as well as leverage with their existing company can work from wherever they want vs. being tied to an office.

I can already hear people being shooting down this theory due to the perceived horrible internet service in VT, but if we can get reliable internet service through Verizon in the NEK people can sure do it elsewhere, especially near a major college.
