It's a pretty thinly veiled political attack.

Default Governor of Vermont is trying to establish Single Payer health care in the state

Here's Governor Shumlin's recent interview about his plans for introducing single payer to Vermont:

Moderator cut: please do not cut and paste. Post link instead.
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/ezr..._man_whod.html

Seems like a lot of buzzwords with little workable detail other than the fact that our current system has an incredible amount of bureaucratic waste, and that most of our high costs aren't even going to the doctors and providers. But if that's the case, creating a new government bureaucracy for the state seems like trying to put a fire out with gasoline.

What about people who like their doctors and health care plan, how will they be affected? How much will employers and residents pay in premiums? If it's the same as right now, why bother? What happens when people from other states who have a chronic disease decide to freeload on Vermont's single payer system? And if Governor Shumlin goes for the third option (contracting single payer to an existing insurance entity), does that just mean he'll give Blue Cross Blue Shield of Vermont full monopoly power over our health care system? If the state suffers a budget crisis (due to say general budget mismanagement unrelated to health care), would our health care benefits be vulnerable to cuts? If not, who will pay for the shortfall? higher taxes?

Seems to me taxes will go up and the availability of care will go down (people will probably border jump to NH for some care if they can afford to). Given the state's current financial mess there's no way it can afford to do this.

The closest model is supposedly Maine. Their healthcare program has been an expensive failure.
What the progressives in this state can't or won't see is that by taxing business to pay for this sort of thing, as they most surely will, they actually harm working people more than they help them. The tax levied against employers to pay for this will surely cause some to leave, which reduces competition among employers for employees, which reduces wages, etc.,etc.
It's too bad the politicians in this state won't just do things like fix roads. Vermont is not some laboratory where all sorts of wacky progressive ideas (Burlington Telecom) can be tried out at taxpayers expense.
