Do they differ greatly throughout the state, county to county, town to town?

Search for your town or city to find the 2009 property rates.

They seem to differ from town to town for me. I live in Williston and I know the surrounding towns have much higher taxes since they don't have Williston's tax base (industrial and retail).

Yes. For instance, if you live around Burlington, you'll have far higher taxes than a rural town like where I grew up in the NEK, because of less spending in the rural NEK town (though I won't say every rural Northern VT town spends wisely). Down here in central VT, I've noticed several of the towns nearby have a lower tax rate than the "city" I'm in, because they spend less. The only tax rate that's the same statewide is the state tax rate, but depending on if you're in certain programs, that will differ somewhat from person to person what you pay.
