iPhone and Android phones are made for the casual person (not gamer). In other words, games without substance. Fling a bird, cut a rope, slash some fruit, fly in planes... Where 3DS and Vita bring in substance. In other words, games with stories, characters to indulge in, etc. I could never see a game like Mario working well on a touch only screen.
As for console gaming, it isn't going anywhere.
P.S. PC gaming is all but extinct. If it weren't for WoW and Steam, it would be completely done. It's too pirated to make money and computers allow too many cheats (via programs) to make it worthwhile for competitive multiplayer. Hence, it's downfall.
I heard some people say that the Iphone and Android will take over the 3DS and PS Vita.
Do you think this is true?
And what about the XBox 360 and PS3 and Wii U?
I own a SNES and Nintendo 3DS. I like the games, and can't see myself playing any other system other than computer gaming.
So are more people playing handhelds and consoles or are more people playing on their phones and their computers?
Well thats the difference between real gamers and just a casual....The Iphone & Andriod will never have games like God of War, Metal Gear Solid, GTA, Professor Layton, Lil Big Planet, Zelda, Uncharted, Metriod....these are good franchises that bring the people back...Plus a real system has inputs....iphone does not have the pro inputs.
I would say that iPhone gaming will overtake the handheld industry; but Console gaming, as long as it keeps up with the latest technologies, will always have a place. I think there's too much substance in handheld; if you're handheld you probably want something quick and easy and simple.
Consoles aren't going away until games can be beamed into our heads through VR (don't laugh, its' comming ).
I wouldn't trade my comfortable couch, big screen HD TV and surround sound for a little hand-held device, even if they sported equally good graphics/games.
Yes console games are stronger then ever. I haven't heard one single discussion of the possiblity of them going away. Man, are you kidding? Some console video game has larger budgets, and larger revenue, then most blockbuster big budget movies.
The war between handhelds and Iphones, etc. They directly compete with each other, not with consoles.

While I agree with the rest of your points, PC gaming is far from extinct. If it were, the good retail gaming rigs wouldn't cost $1000+, and the industry wouldn't be dumping huge sums of money into rolling out the newest games on the PC.

Gaming rigs will always be expensive for the equipment under it. People buy them for that one game i.e. BF3, Crysis, etc that max the equipment.
As for dumping huge sums in new games... examples (not coming from Blizzard)? The majority are either indie projects, i.e. little to no funding, or cross-platform where advertisement mostly pushes console gaming i.e. MW3 ad showing Xbox 360 at the end. Remember CoD was originally a PC Game first... boy have times changed.

Good for you,I hope ya still have them bud
I just got An Atari 2600 and a Colecovision.. Both I have been wanting as I have several good atari games and a few coleco games..... (I didnt have the consoles anymore) I have to wait a bit to play my atari stuff as It didnt have a power cord with it! (But I got it so I would @ least have it....... Ill be looking for a power cord!!)
I have always hated how hard coleco Joysticks are to use compared to Atari's so When I was playing my Donkey Kong game today I put the atari Joystick in. Worked ok (Easier than the coleco ones)
I think the future of gaming is streaming from the cloud. Requirements of an actual console won't be anything beyond a controller, a cheap graphics card that can display the stream, and a good network adapter. So you could be playing a serious AAA hardcore title on something like a tablet with a controller plugged in as all of the computing and rendering is offloaded.
As for retro I still have and love my Intellivision and Odyssey II.
