Completely untrue.
While I can agree many games are unoriginal, claiming what you claim is imo a huge stretch.
Games have become a huge business, just like with movies - most "blockbusters" will re-use the same old, tested cliches (to only mention the Call of Duty series).
But apart from the games you can see advertised, there are indie games. There are big games with sensible plots and intriguing ideas (Fallouts, Spec ops the line, the walking dead games to again only name a handful). There is Kickstarter and all the games that will get made because of the money donated by players through it. There are still games made by gamers for gamers, not only games made by big business for kids
The game market got significantly bigger, there is more money in it than ever before. It is getting harder to see the valuable titles among the sea of games created only to earn $, but they are there and there is a lot of them to choose from.
Edit: and just for the record, I started my gaming with the Atari 2600. Imo apart from nostalgia it has close to zero to offer now.
