Yeah I was in college for the N64 and PS1 era. Only N64 game that had any real appeal for me was Goldeneye. They turned the sledgehammer smashing Italian plumber of my youth into a giggling idiot in that generation. Good for 4 player party games but that's about it.
Technically the N64 was more powerful than the PS1, that said it's format did cripple the system (you could store roughly 10x the data on CD as an N64 cartridge). However that said both platforms had excellent titles that really can't be ignored, N64 had Mario 64, Perfect Dark, Golden Eye, Star Fox, Mario Cart, Diddy Kong Racing, Turoks, Killer Instinct, and Conker! PS1 had Gran Turismo, Resident Evils, Crash, Metal Gear, Final Fantasy and Tekken.
Much of today's top titles still show heritage stemming from both these platforms, regardless of their current platform. Further they both had features that still exist in gaming platforms.
Personally I can't choose one of PS1 or N64, it has to be both, while PS1 had more titles, I'm not convinced it had more quality titles than N64, but it sure didn't have fewer either. How can you really choose between the two?
