I like penny-arcade.com. When they review a game it's usually a well detailed write up. They don't give out scores like IGN and stuff, just what they think of the game after playing it.

Many of the professional sites are skewed by the need to placate advertisers. Just go to Amazon and look up the user reviews.

User-oriented ratings include Metacritic, Gamerankings, and Gamespot. Even IMDB has some user game ratings and reviews along with voice actor info.

I find it best to watch gameplay footage of the game as well as read up on previews and developer commentary. Most previews or hands on impressions reveal more on the game than the final review. By watching gameplay footage, the person can analyze the game on their own and decide whether he or she wants to look up more information on the game.
