I hate to say this, but for me, Skyrim was a one play through type game. I loved it and I wanted to actually cook, craft armor, and all of this stuff but ended up just wanting to see the end game. After I beat it I tried playing a "slow" play through but hardly got anywhere.
I was thinking that is what you do in The Last of Us but I've never played it so I can't say. Have any suggestions?
The Last of Us is more of an action/horror game with a great story and atmosphere. It does an excellent job of making you feel like you're in a completely rundown and desperate world. I highly recommend the game, but it's not an open, sandbox type game like Fallout.
Thx for the 411 on Wasteland 2. I've been playing the alpha version of The Forest the last couple of days. FUNNNNNNNNN! Although my computer isn't exactly set up for gaming if I tone down a lot of the settings it will still run ok for me. I've got myself set up with a nice hunting shelter and fire on a little island off the coast w/ plenty of rabbits and lizards. The cannibals don't seem to like getting in the water so they don't venture out to bother me. . Once I get a little better at the game I'll start exploring the island more for better supplies.
'Dead Island" might be of interest. Although the survival is limited to an island. This is an open world game similar to GTA and all that, just with zombies. And who doesn't enjoy zombies?
I rather enjoyed the game and it has some sequals as well.
They also have, of course, the excellent "Walking Dead" video game which has been discussed in this forum before. Low on action but an incredible story line.
Update on 7 Days to Die, this past Friday they did their massive alpha 9 update, new randomly generated worlds that go on forever, wasteland city you can explore from the get go, more challenge with survival due to reduced loot. The biggest change right now is the randomly generated worlds, needs a little tweaking before it gets really good, but for now I think it's still fun.
