When I was a kid I really enjoyed X-Wing, followed by X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter with the BoP expansion. Is there anything new that's similar to these?

star wars squadrons is supposed to be out later this year. EA is still behind it, so I have set my expectations very low.

From what I've heard, their last game Star Wars Jed: Fallen Order was solid, though I haven't played it. It appears that they've finally learned their lesson regarding microtransactions.

Starfighter and the sequel Jedi Starfighter for the PS2 were considered respectable successors to the tie fighter genre.

Respectable by whom?

Not most people, they were simplified knock offs that were barely a step above rail shooters.

How has no one mentioned the Freelancer series yet? Epic games.

The Descent Freespace series is good, even though true Descent fans will reject Freespace as a Descent game due to the Descent atmosphere of claustrophobia.

The X-games are great, too.

Star Wars: Starfighter

Eurogamer 9 out of 10
Game Informer 9.25 out of 10
XGP Gaming 9.0/10.0
GameZone 10/10
IGN 9 out of 10
OPM 4.5 out of 5
GamePro 4.5 out of 5
GameRankings 86.01%
MetaCritic 84%

In 2001, the amount of enemies on-screen at the same time on a home system, with little to no slowdown, was unheralded. Nothing had been equal to it before. Remember, I'm referring to the PS2 version...not the substandard later ports to PC and the X-Box. Both of those got much lower scores because they were not of the same quality that the PS2 version saw.

That X series looks interesting, though a review of X:Rebirth didn't regard that one particularly well.
